Stunning that most of the stories of failure that jump out first, are stories about school. About being judged and found wanting.

So many of our conceptions of failure /failing are contextualized in school/schooling... what a beautiful potential exists for fostering feelings of success!!

a big red X across an entire page of my writing accompanied by "NO" in a blue test booklet from an english teacher i despised. i took a step back and realized that, in fact, it was she who failed me. never do i use red on my students' work.

I was in 1st grade in a catholic school and did not complete one homework assignment. I was a teacher's pet and nerd. I was used to good grades and complements. I walk to the teacher at her desk so she can check my homework. She looks at it, looks at me with disgust, and yells that it is incomplete and I need to finish it. I said that my dad helped me. She yells that it's because they don't speak English and need to speak it to help me. She puts a big red X on the page. I walk back to my desk in the back of the room. The other kids give me consoling looks. I do my best not to cry.

I failed at writing my first college essay. Professor asked, "Was this some kind of joke?"

I failed at making an acceptable page of lowercase 'i's in 1st grade. She said, "Don't make them like lollipops." I didn't get it. I figured that dot was important, otherwise why have it there at all? She tore my page up in front of the class.

Eve
I failed at sleeping. Over and over.
